On Feb. 25, 2026, Richard Montgomery High School hosted MCPS’ 2026 Basketball County Championships, featuring #1 Blake, taking on #2 Whitman for Boys Basketball, and #1 Whitman facing #2 Richard Montgomery for Girls Basketball.
The Boys started their dual at 5:30, with both teams struggling to score early on. Whether it was because of the crowd noise or the unfamiliar court, both teams were missing open shots to start the game. Blake’s Christian Kenard and Tahj Martin led the game through the first half, dominating Blake’s offensive possession. Not to be outdone, Whitman’s Daouda Sow kept the Vikings close, seeming to recover nearly every rebound in the first quarter. Blake would end up leading the opening half, with a halftime score of 33-21 in the Bengals’ favor.
Armani Fowlkes for Blake and Max Williams for Whitman seemed to turn up the burner to start the second half, with the two going back-to-back on multiple runs. Thanks to Williams and Will Shapiro, the Vikings took the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter, 46-43. At the end, the Vikings came up just short, with Blake taking home their second consecutive county championship. Armani Fowlkes finished with 20 points for the Bengals, with Max Williams finishing with 27 for the Vikings. Blake finished with a final score of 67-55, becoming back-to-back county champions.
Richard Montgomery and Whitman tipped off at 7:25 for the Girls County Championship Game. The two teams had already faced off earlier in the season, with the Vikings taking home the win in their only previous matchup.
The Vikings entered the night with an undefeated record, but early into the first quarter, Richard Montgomery, on home court, looked to threaten that record with Yale commit Katie Diao, leading the charge with 17 points in the first two quarters. The Vikings’ Rocky Cruz and Kaylah Tchoufal ensured the Vikings would control the first half, leaving the Rockets trailing by only three, 34-37, with momentum staying tight entering the second half. Cruz started with 13 in the first quarter, as Tchoufa ended the half with 12.
At the end of the third quarter, the Vikings would extend their lead, but only by a point, leading 49-45 entering the fourth. Unfortunately for the Rockets, their charge couldn’t span all the way through the game, with the Vikings taking home the county championship in a 65-59 victory, moving to 21-0 on the season.
